"I volunteer at Safelight because it is a non-profit organization that not only offers support in the moment of crisis but continued support for all family members. It offers opportunities to learn skills that will create independence, a safe home environment and further education. I came to the United States, planning to stay for a year and 36 years later I am still here. I love to garden, bake and travel. Apparently I am good at steaming ( my usual job at the resale store), who knew… "

"15 years ago, Safelight's (then Mainstay) mission was where I decided to begin my volunteer journey. I have met so many strong and amazing women on this journey. I started at the front desk and helped with fundraisers. Then onto being a Board Member for 6 years. I have loved volunteering at the Dandelion since it opened 10 years ago. I have grown so much in these past 15 years and have loved every single minute and am proud to be a part of Safelight!"

"I have been able to volunteer with the Safelight Resale shop just about two years. As the central Henderson County, non-profit which gives assistance to clients who have been abused within their own home or relationships, it is a critical agency to our community. It has been easy to find three hours a week to volunteer. In addition to the shop, I have been honored to give of my artistic talents to promote the shop and Dandelion. Painting the window murals and making store signs is a natural way for me to contribute to the agency."
Catherine Langsdorf, Resale Store & Artistry Volunteer
"I started volunteering at the Safelight (formerly Mainstay) shelter front desk in August, 2006, right after I retired from teaching. It was then located on Main Street where the downtown theater was. I chose to work there because I had known women who were abused and wanted to help however I could. Safelight has seen many changes since then, but it keeps getting better. Women can now get training in food service at the Dandelion, sewing on up-to-date machines at the shelter, and classes at BRCC. Their young children are in the shelter daycare while they are working or at school. Both the women and children get counseling as needed."
