Camp Hope America

In 2024, Safelight was chosen to become 1 of over 50 and 1 of 3 in North Carolina organizations nationwide to operate a Camp Hope America program. Built upon a national evidence-based model, Camp Hope America in Henderson County helps children and youth ages 7-14 who have experienced or witnessed violence find pathways to hope and healing through a week-long residential camp experience and monthly mentorship events, called Pathways. This program gives children and opportunity to feel seen and heard, all while having space for character and resiliency development, empowerment, and mentorship.

Pathways

The year-round piece of Camp HOPE is Pathways, a monthly group mentorship program with activities for our participants. Events are held throughout the year and range from team-building activities to family events. Our Pathways events have included community building activities, such as sporting events and arts and crafts projects, and summer camp preparedness events, such as songs and smores, and a session on the principle of “leave no trace” in the outdoors. At each activity, program participants can interact with other children their own age, who have also experienced trauma. They also receive guidance and support from Safelight’s Hope Team, community volunteer mentors and, oftentimes, therapy dogs. Pathways aims to create a safe and nurturing community for not only the youth involved, but also their families.

Summer Camp

Through a weeklong residential camp experience, our campers are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone and accomplish an activity they haven’t had the opportunity to do before, to overcome their fears. Each day, campers read about real people, not much older than they are, who have overcome adversity, abuse, and other real-life challenges to show them they are not alone, and that their past does not define their future

Our summer camp takes place at Green River Preserve. Throughout the course of a week at camp, campers will participate in a variety of activities including:

swimming

field games

hiking

arts and crafts

campfires

and so much more!
